Easy

Worked 24 hours at Humble FD

It was an easy day at work. Josh joined me for a 1.5 mile run around the station. Josh just started running again and he is doing very well. The run was undemanding, even though it was 95+ degrees, we were running on concrete, AND we were doing tiny circles around the station. I continued walking after the run till I hit the golden one-hour mark. Good day!

Kingwood FIT, week 4

I ran this morning with Kingwood FIT. Alison decided to ride her scooter for the three-mile route, while I pusher Preston in his stroller. She made it 1.75 miles and then she decided to run. Alison was starting on tired legs, so she was only able to run half a mile before quitting. The only option I had was to load her into the stroller with Preston. It was difficult pushing the stroller with two kids (about 100 lbs combined), plus I was trying to catch a couple runners ahead of me. I finished, but it took a great deal of effort.

Run:

The kids and I didn’t do much the rest of the day, other than hang out at the house.

Alison's crash

I didn’t work at either job, but I was plenty busy!

First off and most importantly, the kids are home. We made a couple trips to the dealership; one to retrieve a key and check (for the custom install parts), then we went back again near the end of the day because my license plates and registration was ready. In between the two dealership visits we did a little school clothes shopping and a hour of cardio.

The kids and I cycled the five mile loop. It has been a long time since I’ve been on my bike and it almost seemed odd. I pulled the bike trailer with Preston in tow, while Alison followed closely on her bike. With one mile to go Alison was distracted looking at an apartment, resulting in a gnarly crash. She skinned her knee, elbow, and bruised her hip, but she is a tough trooper. She cried for about 30-seconds and then she got back on her bike. It was sad to see blood dripping down her leg (minimal) while she was cycling home.

After the bike ride I walked around the bayou while pushing Preston in the stroller. Alison skipped the run, although she hung out at the bayou so I could keep her in sight. I had a surprisingly fast pace today. The temperatures were in the upper 80’s, but I’d trade an 85 degree day with high humidity for a dry upper 90 degree day in a heartbeat.

Work Run

Work 24 hours at Humble FD

I woke up again this morning with back pain. I made plans to run with Tom before work, but back pain left me walking bent over. Instead of running I elected to stretch, which relieved most of my discomfort and prepared me for a day of work.

Surprisingly, my back has been feeling okay, although I still have the feeling that something isn’t right. Josh and Scott joined me for a run around the station. It was a good run considering my options.

Trying to burn some calories

Worked 10 hours at MSC

I started the day with more back pain. Within a couple hours most of the pain dissolved into a nagging ache. There’s a noticeable weakness in my back when I bend over and pick up anything heavy.

Once I got home I rushed to mow the lawn while pre-storm dark clouds were overhead. After mowing I took Blazer out for a run/walk. The run felt pretty good, although the pace was pedestrian. I’m hopefull the back pain is in the rear view mirror.

Lidocaine Patch

Worked 10 hours at MSC

I woke up early to meet Erin in Humble so I could have breakfast with the kids. She was dropping her husband off at the airport and made the kind gesture. It was great seeing them, even if it was only for 30-minutes.

My back doesn’t feel any better, but I wanted to make an attempt at working today. I was having trouble walking, but then something weird happened. The more I tried to work the better my back felt. Also, one my co-workers suggested I try a “pain patch”. I was skeptical, but I was willing to try anything. The active ingredients were lidocaine, which shouldn’t impair me. As my luck would have it, I was moving lots of big heavy pipe. By lunch time most of my back pain was gone, although I lost the patch a couple hours after placing it on my lower back.

I was feeling better after work. I felt it was smart to rest my back, so that I could fully recover.

Back Pain

My back is killing me. I’ve been trying to do little as possible, yet I took off work because I have a lot to do today. The new part-time joband new gym membership may have been too much for this old body. No exercising today.

New Truck

I’m starting to feel a slight discomfort in my lower back, much like the feeling I get when my back "goes out". Needless to say this worries me. Yesterday's run was longer than scheduled and it was on concrete, therefore I’m taking the day off.

This morning I took delivery of my new truck. It is really, really nice. The customization isn’t complete because they are waiting for a backordered part. The dealership suggested I take delivery and they will call when it’s ready to be lifted and install the new wheels/tires. I’ve been excited about the arrival, so I didn’t object. I'll post a picture when everything is complete.

Kingwood FIT, week 3

Another great run by the Kingwood FIT runners. Assistant coach Barb led the way and maintained a flawless 11:00 pace. Head coach Bonnie has provided some WONDERFUL giveaways for the runners. As non-paid volunteer coaches this is a grand gesture and proves we do this as a labor of love. I truthfully enjoy coaching new runners; it’s the highlight of my week!

After the run I was the “guest speaker” regarding heat emergencies. The notes I printed at work were done with an inkjet printer. The sweat dripping onto the page made everything unreadable, so I had to wing it. This wasn’t my best presentation, but the seminar setting is informal enough that my talk about heat emergencies was sufficient.

My legs feel better today, yet soreness still plagues my lower extremities. By tomorrow I hope to be back to “normal”.

The new truck I ordered has finally arrived and I’m scheduled to pick it up tomorrow! I’ve been getting ready for the new arrival and making sure the current truck stays clean so I can get top-dollar trade-in value. After the camper was removed I noticed the back window was filthy because it is not accessible when washing the vehicle. On my way home from the store that removed the camper I decided to stop by the fire station and wash the back window. When I got ready to leave the truck would not start. My luck and the timing is HORRIBLE. Luckily it was just the battery, but I’m still out $100 that I didn’t expect to spend… especially the day BEFORE I trade it. My crappy luck never ceases to amaze me. All I can do is try to smile and laugh at the irony of the situation.

A whole new level of soreness

Working 24 hours at Humble FD

Under my breath I've been cussing Coach Alex all day. Never before have my muscles been this sore. I’m struggling to do the simplest activities. Luckily it’s only my legs, although I feel a bit of soreness setting into my triceps.

In an attempt to loosen my legs up I ran 30 minutes on the treadmill. I struggled in the beginning, but within five minutes I settled into a rhythm, albeit a slooooow rhythm.

Sore

Worked 10 hours at MSC

The soreness from yesterday’s workout slowed me down at work and it showed in my total daily burn.

At the end of yesterday’s workout coach Alex invited me back today. With a tremble in my voice I agreed. We had a sinfully awesome leg workout. I was hopeful the workout would help with the soreness in my legs. Boy was wrong, very wrong. I made it through the entire workout, but I was completely taxed at the end.

I’ve started talking to some of the guys at the gym. The stories of huge transformations are very inspiring. I can’t wait to see what my results will be!

Today’s workout at TEAM SWOLL whooped me to the point I could not muster enough energy to run.

Team Swoll workout

Yesterday’s crappy day lasted throughout the night. We made six EMS calls after 10pm and they were spaced far enough apart to prevent any sleep. I wasn’t in any shape to work, so I made arrangements with my part-time job, which they didn’t mind.

The new truck I ordered has finally arrived. It is badass and I can’t wait to drive it home. I gave them the ok to proceed with the aftermarket add-on’s. Hopefully I’ll have it by next week.

I joined a "hybrid" function fitness club called, TEAM SWOLL today and had my first workout. That was a wickedly tough workout. Coach Alex said most first time members only make it 13-15 minutes. I’m proud to say I made it 22-minutes… but it came at a cost. When I stopped at 22-minutes it was because I was outside throwing up in the grass. After resting a few minutes I tried to rejoin the guys, but I was done. The workout was so hard it took 10-15 minutes for my heart rate to come down!

A couple hours later Blazer and I walked to Schlotzsky’s for a well deserved sandwich. It was an eventful walk under the cool evening sky.

Overcoming challenges at work

Worked 24 hours at Humble FD

The North Harris county area received a pleasant amount of rain over several hours this morning.

I visited a new local “functional fitness gym” in Humble. The owner was cool and I think I will give this place a try, starting tomorrow.

It’s been a crappy day. Everyone I’ve dealt with has been in a foul mood, which is somewhat contagious.

I forgot my gym bag at home. Luckily, a good friend retrieved the bag from my house and brought it to work for me. Once I got my running clothes, I ran around the area of station two, which no one has ever done. The area isn’t the best, forcing most firefighters to run at station one. Half way into the run I received an EMS call. I continued the run once the call was completed.

I was eager to make my minimum 1,500 kcal burn, but we got another EMS call. I managed to finish my run and walk for a total of 60-minutes. My total burn was -150 kcals short of the minimum goal. It’s close to midnight and there's no way to make the goal.

What is wrong with these punk-ass kids in our society!?!?

Worked 11 hours at MSC

The week just started and I’m already exhausted. I had a close call at work today. I was pulling a pallet of 72 ceramic sinks (probably 400-500 pounds). I was walking backwards and tripped over the forks of the forklift. Before I could do anything my left foot was pinned between the pallet jack and the fork of the lift. It’s amazing that nothing broke… at least it doesn’t appear so. The injury is not as bad as it could have been, other than being painful to the touch, minor swelling, and a laceration.

The accident might have been karma for my actions at lunch. Long story short, I nearly made a punk-ass kid cry.

For those interested, here’s the detailed story: I was eating lunch at Whataburger. I was sitting near the soda dispensing machine, facing the windows. An older man was cleaning his vehicle at the car wash. I watched him walk into the restaurant and ask for a water cup. They handed him a small clear water cup, but he pleaded for a larger cup because it was “really hot outside”. He filled the new larger cup with water and walked back to the car wash next door. He immediately gave the cup to his son, who was now walking towards the restaurant. Once inside the store the boy poured out the water and refilled it was soda. This wasn’t an ordinary kid, this was a punk. The kid was about 17 years old, he had tattoos on his neck, HUGE diamond studs in each ear lobe, and his pants were hanging off his ass for the world to see. While drinking his fountain drink he stood there looking around, as if to see is anyone was watching. I kept constant eye contact with him to let him know he wasn’t getting away with it. I must have made him nervous because he refilled his cup again and sat down at a booth like the other PAYING patrons. Once I finished my lunch I walked over to him and asked, “How do you feel about that?” to which he replied sarcastically, “WHAT!?” I said, “How does it make you feel to steal that soda?” Immediately he started to tell me a story how he bought this drink earlier today. I stopped him by saying, “You’re already a thief, now you want to be a liar too?” From that point on he never said another word, he simply starred at the table, although that didn’t stop me from telling him that I had watched everything he had done. I did this in a moderately loud voice, for the other people to hear, hoping it would embarrass him enough to think about his actions. Before my rant was finished I could tell his eyes were glassed over. He was either consciously ignoring me or on the verge of crying.

I don’t know what came over me to say what I did. For sure I’m tired of these punk-ass kids ruining our society. If people like him are our future, then we are all doomed. These dumbass kids don’t have an education, work ethic, or a lick of respect… yet WE THE PEOPLE allow them to live off government aid and behave the way they do. This one little rant won’t change much, but maybe he’ll think twice when he steals something. In his mind he probably said, “It’s just soda”… but isn’t that where it starts? Today it is a fountain drink and next week he’s breaking into cars!?!?

Rambling over, back to our regularly schedule broadcast…

Humidity kills...

First thing this morning I mowed the lawn, which took a few hours.

I’m amazed how tolerable the temperatures are when high humidity levels are not in the mix. When I took off on today’s run it was 98-degrees, yet the conditions felt better than the last half-dozen runs.

Another thing I find remarkable; The amount of damage done to your legs by running on concrete. For the first time in months my legs were sore. The soreness only lasted a few hours after yesterday’s run, but they were sore nonetheless.

Today’s pace felt swift, but the Garmin Forerunner revealed the same average pace. No worries from me, it was still a good workout.

Sub-240

Worked 10.25 hours at MSC

It was a busy day at work. I expected a higher “burn”, but the BB doesn't lie. I still managed to burn 5,000 calories today.

My weight finally dipped into the 230’s. Historically, in the past I start feeling “lighter” around the 225-lb mark. That’s fifteen more pounds, which I hope to lose within the next four weeks. The next goal after that is sub-200, then my goal weight of 180.

My free-meals have been out-of-control. I’ve decided that I will not allow any more surplus calorie days. What this means; I will allow myself a zero deficit on "free meal day". The total amount of calories allotted for the meal will depend on the total burn for that particular day. Maybe this parameter will alleviated the issue with massive calorie meals.

Blazer's Surgery

Worked 4.5 hours at MSC

Randomness of my day; As soon as I was off duty at the fire station I rushed home to get Blazer. I needed to be in Conroe by 8:30am for her spayed surgery. MSC has several people on vacation, so they asked me to work, even if it was just a few hours. After dropping Blazer off at MCAS and changing clothes at home I went into work at MSC till 2:30pm. From there I drove back to Conroe to retrieve Blazer and finally back home.

I didn’t go running till 7pm. The sky was overcast and the air was still. The temperature was in the lower 90’s and the humidity felt close to 100%. Have you ever run inside a sauna? Well, that’s what it felt like. I can acclimate to the heat, but not the humidity.

Even though I’m bitching about the humidity, the run went well. I haven’t worn my knee brace since Tuesday. I didn’t want to push my luck, so I wore the brace while running. I’m happy to be running pain-free again.

Two miles

Worked 10 hours at MSC today

Blazer and I endured the heat and humidity while trekking along the bayou trail. This was one of the hottest runs of the season.

I'm glad to report that my knees are behaving nicely. I had a minor bout of side stitches during today's run, most likely the result of eating prior to running.

For the first time in months, I ran two continuous miles. As an added bonus, the pace was sub-11:00 minutes/mile. Although this is a small physical accomplishment, those two miles are a huge mental feat.

KWFIT day 1

Starting day for Kingwood Fit was successful. The crowd seemed a bit smaller than usual, but I’m eager to meet new runners. With a little luck I’ll have some trail nerds in my pace group.

The kids and I cycled to River Grove Park, while collecting cans. I towed Preston in the trailer and Alison followed closely on her bike. We cut the ride short because it started raining.

After dropping the kids off, I took Blazer for a run/walk on the bayou trail. I told myself I would go run once the temperature dropped below 95 degrees, which didn’t happen till 6:30pm. This was a tough run due to the heat, but I’m glad to run without any knee issues.

Ready. Set. GOOOOOO

When the kids are home our days are action packed and there’s hardly a minute to rest.

Shortly after waking up the kids and I ran along the bayou trail. By 8am the heat was already suffocating, yet the run went well despite the temperatures. I pushed Preston in the stroller and Alison lead Blazer on a leash. Alison wasn’t as enthused to run, so I gave her a shortcut option. Alison still ran nearly one-mile!

I FINALLY have part of my garage space back. With the addition of the new part-time job, I can’t imagine having much time for storage auctions. I offered Josh a reasonable value to “buy-out” my portions of the remaining goods. I wanted the crap out of my garage as soon as possible, so I personally delivered everything to his house this morning. I have every intention of cleaning and reorganizing my garage in the upcoming weeks.

I picked up the knee sleeve/brace that Dr. Muscat ordered yesterday. It’s not much different than those sold at Academy, but it is more comfortable while providing ample compression to my knee. The additional swelling from the steroid shot in my left knee is starting to reside. Hopefully I will see a reduction in the bursitis very soon.

Alison took her new kayak out for the first time, while Preston and I rode in my kayak. Within minutes she was paddling like a pro. Since it was our maiden voyage, we kept a tether between our two kayaks. We had a great time on the water and this will be a fun option for the family on hot summer days.

The kids and I finished the day with a trip to Half-Price Books and the Movie Tavern to see, “Zoo Keeper”. These activities may not seem like much, but we have been going 100 mph all day.

I’m not sure what to do about Blazer. Yesterday evening I left her alone in the house for a couple hours and she proceeded to go through the pantry and garbage cans. It looked like a small child had been left alone, especially when I found an empty roll of Ritz crackers and all the debris in her doggy bed. My neighbors are starting to “politely” complain more about her, because she howls all day when I’m at work. I’ve exhausted my options and did everything I could to give her a good home. I don’t know what else to do…

Beyond the complaints about Blazer, my once great neighbors have become quite intrusive. By far, I'm the youngest home owner on my street and the only one not retired. Out of no where they seem to think it is necessary to give me unwarranted advice about; my lawn, my dog, my house, my work etc. With my neighbors being seniors I have always been friendly and respectful. But I'm sorry to tell them, those days are over. I've started standing my ground and they don't know what to think when I put them back in their place. I'm making myself sound really bad, but trust me... a couple of these neighbors have plucked my last nerve. For the most part they are still good neighbors, but they need a hobby and stop being so damn nosy.

My knee issues are ALL OVER THE PLACE. Yesterday I had a painful and audible click with each step, which lasted a couple hours. I purchased a lightweight compression sleeve which I could wear long. The new sleeve resolved the clicking and overall swelling of my knee. I also bought a bottle of glucosamine with chondroitin. Maybe this stuff will help, I sure hope so for the price.

I’ve been “wheeling & dealing” for a couple days and I think everything is finally in order. Once deal is finalized I will break the news on my blog.

Knee pain and resetting goals

While at work something weird happened with my knee yesterday. Late in the shift I was sitting at the table and when I stood up there was an awful pain on the posterior-lateral aspect of my patella. The pain was significant enough that I was walking with a limp. The issue is still bothering me today, but not nearly as bad.

I’m going to reset my burn and deficit parameters back to the original numbers. Without the constant burn (like I have at MSC), it is VERY difficult to achieve my daily goals. Today was a prime example. It’s been a busy day, but I'm not even close to my numbers. In fact, I’d have to log an additional two hours of cardio to reach my goal for today.

My weight has been jumping up and down with large swings. When my weight swings to the high side it is hard to accept. This morning I saw a 3.5 pound increase. URG!

I had my free-meal of Mexican food. All seemed well until later in the evening when I realized how far behind I was with my burn. My free-meal day turned into a “the hell with it” day, resulting in another high calorie meal. No reason to dwell on the foods... tomorrow is a new day.

Blazer and I were on the bayou trail when a large rain storm caught us by surprise. The rain didn’t bother me, but the lightening was entirely too close for comfort.
